Kobe Bryant concerned with 2010 NBA Finals, not past history between Boston Celtics and Lakers
Kobe Bryant is out to erase the memory of losing to the Boston Celtics in the 2008 NBA Finals, and has no interest in talking about legendary battles between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain

LOS ANGELES - What rivalry?
For Kobe Bryant, the long, storied rivalry between the Lakers and Celtics isn't "official."
"In order for a rivalry to become official," Bryant said yesterday, "the other team has to win. We haven't beaten the Celtics yet."
You could hear the booing all the way back in Beantown.
Bryant didn't say it maliciously. It might have been his best quote in weeks, since he's been reduced to giving the media nothing more than crumbs at his daily press briefings. His general mood during the Finals when he's been marched into the interview room can be summed up in two words: total disdain.
But examine the quote and you really don't need to ask yourself if Bryant has something left for tonight's Game 7, the first in 26 years between the NBA's flagship franchises.
He has been waiting for this moment for two long years, ever since the Lakers were unceremoniously bounced out of the 2008 Finals by a record 39 points.
That made the overall score between the Celtics and Lakers, 9-2, in favor of Boston.
But Kobe's math works out this way: Celtics 1, Lakers 0.
Kobe's bottom line drives the good people of Boston crazy, because he seemingly does not want to acknowledge anything between 1959, when Bill Russell's teams started their streak of seven Finals wins over the Lakers, including three Game 7 victories, and the '80s, when Larry Bird won one against Magic Johnson.
Bryant doesn't help his own cause, as was the case when he was confronted with the fact that the rivalry dates back 51 years, with the two teams playing for the championship more times than any other teams in pro football, baseball or hockey.
"Ain't got nothing to do with me right now," he said.
So as far as rivalries go, he puts Duke-Carolina and Spurs-Lakers above this one. That's blasphemy, back in Back Bay.
"I'm in the moment right now," he said. "I've got to focus on that. I can't focus on the hype about it."
However he might downplay it up on a podium, off it he is obsessed with beating Boston. He knows all about the long history between pro basketball's royalty. He understands what the rivalry has meant to the old-guard Lakers, including his good friend, Jerry West, who still can't get over the fact that he lost all three Game 7s to Russell.
"That's not a topic of conversation a 17-year-old kid wants to talk to 'The Logo' about," Bryant said of the former Laker great and VP. "Happier times."
Except around here, it's mainly been only miserable times for the Lakers, who would pull within one title of Boston's NBA-record 17 if they win tonight. Only Johnson's Lakers can feel good about themselves, having won two of three meetings against the Bird-era Celtics.
Jerry Buss
Lakers' Phil Jackson is worth whatever it takes
Jerry BussHe says he has 'no clue' whether he will be back, but his patience and almost unrivaled calm played a huge role in the Lakers' clinching victory.
The game was over, maybe his last news conference save telling everyone goodbye a week from now, but he wasn't done.I managed to work myself behind scenes, off limits to the media, but now that Phil Jackson and I have become such great buddies, we have this private meeting place after games.
He seemed to forget, though, in all the excitement of being doused with champagne and taking bows.
"Don't let him talk to me, John, don't," shouted Phil with mock anger, Lakers' publicist John Black suggesting Phil duck into a back door to really get away.
I thought he might have a bottle of champagne to share, but instead he grabbed Pau Gasol, who was passing by for his postgame news conference, Jackson asking him to protect him from "this stalker."
Phil's a funny guy as I have learned, and more relaxed during these playoffs than at any time I have seen him, which makes you wonder if he already knows what he will be doing next year.
"Just give me a hint about next year," I pleaded.
And so he did.
"I have no clue," he said with a wave of his hand and a hardy laugh. "That's as honest as I can be."
A few months back he said he had a kidney stone that would require medical attention, and a few weeks back he said, "65" when it was suggested he might be back next season.
He will turn 65 in September, and Thursday he once again was talking about the 114-game grind the Lakers had this season, and the toll it takes on him.
He earned a base salary of $12 million this season, and reportedly $2 million more in bonuses which he intends to donate to charity. Hard to argue this morning it's not money well-spent.
It might be too rich for the Lakers, but doesn't he have to come back? He's the surest bet as there is in sports when it comes to winning a championship, and Dr. Jerry Buss is the best owner in all of sports, isn't it a no-brainer?
Coach Phil Jackson is surrounded by family and friends after the Lakers won Game 7 of the NBA Finals, 83-79, over the Boston Celtics on Thursday night at Staples Center.
Jackson's coached 19 years in the NBA, advanced to the Finals an astounding 13 times, winning 11 championship rings and yet most of the time he's probably taken for granted.
Lakers' fans have yet to sound the alarm, probably more talk on radio about the return of Derek Fisher and Jordan Farmar when you would think they would've been screaming Holy Tomjanovich at the end of Game 7.
Fortunately, Jeanie and I have something in common; we won't be moving to Montana any time soon, so no way do I see Phil abandoning his girl and buddy for the woods and a life of solitude and mosquitoes.
He's got it too good here, as Jeanie reminded him on the ride to Staples Center before Game 7, videotaping their conversation for Jeanie Vision and telling him how awkward it will be to drive to the arena next year with a new coach.
That probably got his attention.
But what a tough read. The guy almost never shows any emotion, which prompted another hallway conversation after the win in Game 1.
It had struck me as such a cool moment, both teams coming out for the opening tip, the crowd in Staples on its feet screaming and ABC in a commercial break, allowing someone like Jackson to just soak it all in.
When I asked about the moment in a news conference, it went nowhere, requiring a private meeting.
"How come you never show any emotion?"
"I can't allow myself," he said, while citing the teachings of Buddha.
Tell me Buddha wouldn't think about standing up with Sasha Vujacic at the free-throw line, or covering his eyes, the whole season and a championship ring riding on the ball going in.
But that's life in the NBA, heart in hand many a grueling, nerve-racking night, but the ball almost always rolling in, it seems, for any team coached by Jackson.
Some folks still like to note that he coaches only great players, but isn't there greatness in knowing how to handle such talent?
"It's really about my inner being,'' Jackson said. "It's about the joy for this group of guys that put so much work out there."
Before the start of Game 7, Jackson was asked if he was nervous, excited or maybe anxious and Jackson said, "I'm keyed up," in the same voice used by HAL in "2001: A Space Odyssey."
But that's the Lakers' steady hand at the controls, and while not always evident, Jackson's patience and almost unrivaled calm played a huge role in the Lakers' clinching victory.
He even stood up with 11.7 seconds to play, but of course sat down for the finish.
Just resting up for next season, as I see it, as the Lakers' head coach.
KOUFAX ALERT: For anyone who might have missed Sandy Koufax emerging from hibernation a few months back in the Nokia Theatre, Koufax & Torre for the benefit of Safe at Home will be shown again tonight about 7:30 on FSN West.
Koufax starts slowly in the program, but as soon as he starts talking about Henry Aaron and Aaron's success hitting him, he's as brilliant as he was more than 40 years ago on the mound.
As for Torre, he saves the night when the audience makes a bold move to boo the host off the stage and Torre takes over.
TODAY'S LAST word comes in e-mail from Jasper Short:
"Reading your article concerning Jeff Van Gundy's defense of Kobe Bryant leaves me scratching my head. You wonder who he's talking to? He's talking to you.''
Get out of here.

Jovial
Kobe 'Jovial' after Game 4 loss
Following the Laker's Game 4 loss to the Phoenix Suns Kobe Bryant made one thing clear, it was the defense that lost the game, not his team's ability to score points.
"We have to do a much better job defensively," Bryant said calmly at the beginning of his post game press conference Tuesday night in Phoenix.
Bryant took just four shots in the fourth quarter, making three shots. Each of his made shots came with less than a minute and a half remaining in the game.
He added that the Lakers had focused so much on attacking the Suns newly implemented zone, that they lost focus on the defensive end, "which wins you championships."
"Offensively we scored enough points, we have to do a better job defensively, period," an annoyed Bryant repeated when pressed by reporters for the root cause of the defeat.
When a reporter asked Bryant how he was feeling, he responded with one word, "Jovial."
Almost in disbelief the reporter asked Bryant to repeat what he said, and he said again sarcastically said "Jovial." Listen to Bryant's response.
Kobe scored 38 points in the 115-106 loss. Game 5 will be Thursday night at 9 p.m. in Los Angeles.

Kobe Bryant LA Times Photo Shoot – LA Lakers Star Dressed in White For Photo Shoot
Kobe Bryant LA Times Photos: Basketball player Kobe Bryant recently posed for LA Times in an ‘All White Affair’ themed photo shoot.
The L.A. Lakers posed in all white for a Los Angeles Times photo shoot as part of an upcoming interview in the magazine.
These pictures have received mixed reactions, with some people applauding him for this brave effort to do something different, while others criticizing him for looking like a ‘little white robin hood’ in the LA Times photo shoot.
In one such photo for the LA Times, Kobe Bryant can be seen wearing a v-neck tee with a scarf wrapped around his head, while in another one, the star is dressed in a 2-piece suit (see pic above).
For the moment, the Birds are only scheduled to wear the old uniforms for one game. What a tease.
Bringing back the kelly greens full-time makes sense on so many fronts. To begin, it would send a subtle message that the franchise wants the same thing as its fans: to return to a time when the Eagles were the best team in football. It would also allow the team to decommission the midnight green uniforms.
While the current unis ushered in a new, winning era of Eagles football, they also represent a time period in franchise history that will be mostly remembered for getting close - but not winning - a championship.
Why not move forward by embracing the past? Everyone wins that way.
Besides, the Eagles are fully aware that everything old is new (and fashionable and easily marketed). On the team's Web site, there's a grainy video of the 1960s Eagles playing at Franklin Field. As a voice-over implores you to buy merchandise online, you can catch glimpses of Tommy McDonald and Chuck Bednarik (and, if you look closely, most of the Daily News' current sports staff).
From both a business and PR perspective, it makes sense for the Eagles. They can curry favor with the fans while putting money in the organization's already bloated bank account. Plus, and this is no small point, the kelly green uniforms are infinitely cooler than anything the Eagles have donned over the last few years - particularly the blue and yellow 75th anniversary outfits/abominations.
Just as the New England Patriots are meant to rock the logo with the colonial figure hiking the ball through his legs, just as the Jets are supposed to wear the white helmets with the simple green logo, the Birds got it right the first time with the kelly green uniforms. The front office should scrap all the other jerseys and pants and helmets and bring back a combination that works just as well today as it did 50 years ago.
It's the right move. The Eagles need to make it happen.

Gonzo: Eagles should make permanent change to kelly green
It's a good start and a nice gesture, but it's not enough. The Eagles should do more.
On Monday, at a news conference appropriately held at Franklin Field, site of the title game, the Eagles announced they'll honor the 1960 NFL championship team by wearing throwback kelly green uniforms - complete with the classic, white block numbers on the jerseys and helmets with gray wings and facemasks - for the first game of the 2010 season. On Sept. 15, the Birds will play the Green Bay Packers, the team the Eagles defeated 50 years ago, 17-13, to win the franchise's last title of any significance.
